:: Business Incubator Center
Background of the Incubator Center

The Sekondi/Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry (STRCCI) recognizes the array the reasons that account for current general low living standards of local communities.

STRCCI aims to address this situation right at one of its rout causes associated with economical prosperity, employment and job education in the western region.

The strategy of the Business Incubator STRCCI is pursuing aims to increase living standards of the local community by sustainable socializing benefits from business opportunities via the development of local enterprises providing jobs, salaries and education to their members out of the local and regional community.

The Business Incubator concept in its core is a self sustained business model that assembles key stakeholders of the local community to identify entrepreneurs and support them with an environment in which they can grow their enterprises by individual drive.

The net result is that successful local enterprises provide jobs, salaries and education to their employees out of the local community and by that contributing to increase the regional living standard.

Finally it is envisioned that this strategy unleashes a self sustained and self multiplying drive within the local community for repeating this cycle of building talents, identify entrepreneurs and support the growth of enterprises in the western region.

Since the Business Incubator is a business a detailed feasibility study with a financial business model at its core need to be conducted first in order to define the actual detailed shape, content, reach and capacity as well as implementation timeline of the Business Incubator. Before the Business Incubator implementation actually can be kicked off the mutual support commitment of key stakeholders, in particular out of the local and regional community, needs to be assembled.

After those two steps the current planning scenario suggest that a team of four people supported by consultants for special subjects kick off the following three activities in parallel to accomplish the initial set up of the Business Incubator and first registration of Incubator Enterprises within a 12 month period.

Set-up and start conducting business management education to develop talents into entrepreneurs.
Set-up Business Incubator office facilities and operational procedures as well as targeted incubator services.
Set-up relations to key stakeholders, in particular to local universities/polytechnic, the local/regional business community and foreign Chambers of Commerce, Universities and venture partners.

The key assumption is that initial financial funds, local key stakeholder support and entrepreneur type incubator personnel can be made available and committed. Only than the Business Incubator project can be executed and the identified risks be managed/mitigated in order to achieve the envisioned objectives and values.

Business needs and environment for the Business Incubator Center

The Sekondi/Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry is one of the leading business support service providers in Ghana. The chamber is an independent organization serving and promoting the commercial and industrial interest of small and large companies in Western and Central Regions of Ghana.

However, it has been identified that poor knowledge in business management and subsequently inadequate management practices are some of the main challenges facing most businesses, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), in Ghana.

Many local businesses are also therefore under serious threat from foreign investors and competitive imports of goods and services that could be supplied by locally businesses too in case available and competitive enough.

History has shown that for many reasons that Ghana's society has not fully benefited from exploration of its natural treasures and following this the same patterns it may be the same with the up coming oil business in Ghana. As a result increasing frustration of Ghana's society about lost benefits and current poverty level can be viewed as a risk to Ghana's inherent economic structure and balance.

In addition local experiences have shown that the impact and sustainability of traditional corporate social responsibility contributions is to limited on the long run, lacking e.g. increase of jobs and sufficiently educated staff.
One part of the underlining strategy of the Sekondi/Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry with the Business Incubator aims to socialize benefits from business opportunities by developing local enterprises providing jobs, salaries and education to their members out of the local community.
