SEKONDI-TAKORADI
Introduction
Sekondi-Takoradi is located on the West Coast of the country and is about 280km west of Accra and 130km east of La Cote D’Ivoire. It is the capital of the western region and Ghana's third largest city with a population of 335,000. It lies on the main railway lines to Accra and Kumasi. It is located in Shama-Ahanta East Metropolis.
 Background Information
Sekondi-Takoradi is an industrial and commercial center richly endowed in timber, plywood, shipbuilding and railroad repair as the major industries. The two cities developed around Dutch and English forts built in the 17th century, and it combined in 1946. On November 20, 1969, the city became the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi.  Sekondi, the older and larger of the two cities prospered by grace from a railroad built in 1903 to transport mineral, cocoa and timber from interior lands to the coast, which as it stands is  no more in use.  In Takoradi is Ghana’s first deepwater seaport which was built in 1928. The port is still in use and has helped make transport through the sea very easy and efficient.

During the Second World War, Takoradi Air Base played a very vital role being a staging point for British aircraft destined for Egypt.  Other places close to Sekondi-Takoradi are Axim, Tarkwa, Saltpond, Akim Oda and Obuasi.
Oil Production
On the blessed moments of Ghana’s Jubilee celebration (Independence Day) was the discovery of oil in Takoradi.  The Jubilee Field of Cape Three Points in Ahanta West Distrist, which was discovered by Kosmos energy team in the process of drilling mahogany-1 in Ghana’s deep waters in 2007.
Jubilee Field is currently the start of crude oil production in commercial quantities. It has been estimated that in 2011 oil production will be 120,000 barrels per day and accumulated revenue of US$20 billion between 2012 and 2030 will be generated from it. Oil City as the city is currently named (although not officially) due to the massive discovery of oil in the western region of Ghana has attracted massive migration of people all over the world. Will the oil industry bring the jobs and economic growth this place so desperately needs? And what will happen if oil ends up being like cocoa, gold or timber—yet another resource extracted locally but creating profit elsewhere?
Population and Living Standards
The massive migration of business oriented people and fortune seekers has led to an increasing population growth with the roads being jammed with lots of people. One would say that because of the oil production the financial position will be good in the town and the cost of living will be normal, fortunately this is not the case in Secondi-Takoradi, the cost of living is very high. What could be the cause, this question is left to our noble economists to answer.
Investment and Business Opportunities
Over the years the Metropolis has attracted a good number of investors including miners as the city is close to the mining towns in the region. Many companies have come into existence prior to the discovery of oil and also the fast growing population. These have helped reduce the unemployment rate in the city. There are prospects of discovering more oil in the town and more investors can take advantage of this.  Sekondi-Takoradi is strategically located because of its closeness to the sea and airport which makes it easily accessible for transportation both through the sea and air. Activities in the town include textile manufacturing, manufacturing of rubber products, glass manufacturing and gas production, just to mention but a few. With the ever increasing population and the vehicular traffic at the Central Business Area and lack of adequate parking spaces, it is the vision of the Assembly to team up with an investor to develop a modern car park to help ease the vehicular traffic congestion at the area.
Education
Sekondi city currently has several secondary schools, colleges, and Special schools, these include: Ghana Secondary Technical school (GSTS), St John’s School, and Secondi College. Takoradi also has Takoradi Technical Institute (TTI), which houses a Fabrication Lab, equipped by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and is the first of its kind in Africa. The City has well have Holy Child Training College for teachers and Effiankwanta Nursing Training College.
Takoradi Polytechnic can also be found in the city and it is envisaged that it will play a significant role in developing the manpower that will serve the new oil industry in the region.
Tourist Attraction
Sekondi-Takoradi has lots of beautiful beaches which attracts a lot of tourists from throughout the world, including Abusei Beach Resort, among others. It also have nice and affordable hotels including Raybow International Hotel which have several amenities like free internet service, Stellar Lodge, Takoradi Beach Hotel       among others. The Essei Lagoon Leisure Complex is one of the attractive places in Secondi, located in the heart of the town making it easily accessible to tourists and can also be used as a holiday centre in the town.
Sister Cities
Sekondi-Takoradi is a Sister City of Boston (Massachusetts, USA) Oakland (Califonia, USA) and maintains a link with Plymouth (Devon, England).
Conclusion
Secondi-Takoradi the only twin city of Ghana is strategically located and also endowed with timber, cocoa, minerals, oil and good schools that gives the opportunity for lots of business operation and other things that everybody can take advantage of.
